It works by preventing the release of substances in the body that cause eczema and psoriasis. Betnovate is a product of GlaxoSmithKline. It is available as an ointment, lotion, and cream. The Ointment is for external use to reduce rashes, pain, crusty skin or itchiness caused by your skin’s reaction to an irritant.

How Does Betnovate Ointment Work?

When the body gets exposed to an allergen or irritation, it reacts by producing chemicals. The chemical messengers (prostaglandins) widen blood vessels and cause skin inflammation, which results in sore skin and eczema breakouts.  Betnovate has anti-inflammatory properties. It works by reducing the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation of the skin. It is a safe and effective treatment that reduces the scaly, itchy patches that may develop on the elbows, knees, scalp, and other body parts

Warnings for Betnovate Ointment

Do not apply Betnovate Ointment on the scalp,  face, mouth, or ears. The ointment is unsuitable for you if you have the below conditions:
  • Are allergic to steroid medicines.
  • Have a large area of affected skin.
  • Have psoriasis.
  • Have a chronic leg ulcer.
  • Are pregnant.

Directions for Use

  • Wash and dry the affected area before applying a thin layer of Betnovate Ointment.
  • Avoid any contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Avoid covering the treated area with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor.

Ingredients

Betnovate Ingredients

The active ingredient in Betnovate is betamethasone 0.1% (as valerate).  It also contains the inactive ingredients cetomacrogol 1000, chlorocresol, cetostearyl alcohol, soft white paraffin, liquid paraffin, sodium acid phosphate, phosphoric acid, sodium hydroxide, and purified water.

Side effects from using Betnovate Ointment are rare. If you experience any, they may include:
  • Use of this medicine may cause a burning sensation, itching, irritation, redness, and pain at the application site.
  • Reduction in bone density.
