What is Canesten 1% Cream?

Canesten 1% cream is a medication that is used to provide fast and soothing relief from symptoms of fungal infections on the skin. The cream can also be used to treat fungal infections in the mouth or vagina.

How Does Canesten Work?

Fungal infections occur when the body is invaded by too much harmful fungus for the immune system to handle. Although the body constitutes helpful microbes, when harmful fungi invade the body they can be difficult to manage. Canesten cream is an anti-fungal medication that works by destroying the cell membrane of the fungi, stops it from producing ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. As a result, holes begin to appear on the fungi, exposing them to attacks from white blood cells that fight and kill the fungi, and treat the infection. 

What Does Canesten Treat?

Canesten cream can be used to treat:
  • Candida
  • Ringworm infection
  • Fungal sweat rash
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Fungal nappy rash
  • Irritation of the vulva or penis caused by a thrush

Warnings

  • Avoid sharing personal items such as towels with others to prevent re-infection.
  • Avoid scratching the affected area even if they itch to prevent damaging the skin surface, and spreading the infection.
  • Do not apply Canesten on injured or sensitive skin
  • If you are using Canesten on the penis or vulva, seek alternative contraceptive options because Canesten interferes with rubber contraceptives.
  • You and your sexual partner should be treated at the same time if any of you has symptoms of thrush to prevent re-infection.
  • Inform your doctor of any underlying medical conditions before using Canesten cream.
  • Inform your doctor of any prescription medication you may be taking before using Canesten cream.
  • If you accidentally swallow it, seek immediate medical assistance.

Directions

  • Canesten cream is meant for external use only
  • Follow the instructions given by your doctor, or read the information provided on the prescription label if you are self-medicating.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after using the cream.
  • Always apply the cream thinly and evenly on the affected areas as directed by your doctor.
  • If you are treating athlete's foot, wash your feet, socks and shoes and dry them properly. 
  • Remember to change your footwear and clothing regularly.
  • Always continue with the treatment for the recommended duration even after the symptoms clear away.

Ingredients

  • The active ingredient is Clotrimazole 1%
  • The inactive ingredients are polysorbate 60, purified water, benzyl alcohol, cetyl palmitate, sorbitan stearate, octyldodecanol, and Cetostearyl alcohol.
