What Is Fucidin Cream?

Fucidin cream is an antibiotic cream that treats eczema or psoriasis. It is a topical treatment applied to the affected area to prevent itchy, red, or sore skin from getting worse. A doctor must prescribe the drug and, therefore, it is unavailable over the counter.

How Does Fucidin Cream Work?

The active ingredient in Fucidin is Fusidic acid. It provides the antibiotic properties to the drug. Fusidic acid works by stopping the bacteria that cause infections from growing and multiplying. When the disease-causing bacteria get suppressed, they do not produce a protein that causes skin and scalp irritation.  In inhibiting protein production by bacteria, Fusidic acid prevents this bacteria from replicating and spreading. The immune system eventually kills the bacteria relieving the crusty skin from eczema and dermatitis.

Warnings for Fucidin Cream

Avoid using Fucidin cream near eyes. If you accidentally get any in your eye, wash it out with cold water straight away, then bathe your eye with eyewash. Avoid the cream if you meet the below conditions:
  • Are allergic to any of its ingredients.
  • Are allergic to steroid medicines.
  • Using Fucidin cream over large areas of skin.
  • Have acne or perioral dermatitis
  • Have bacteria or viral infection other than on the skin.

Directions for Use

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before use.
  • Apply a thin layer of the cream to the infected area.
  • Be careful to avoid your eyes if you use it on your face.
Leave Fucidin cream to soak in for 30 minutes before applying other lotions or ointments to ensure it is fully absorbed and not diluted.

Fucidin Ingredients

The active ingredients contained in Fucidin is Fusidic acid (2%).  Fucidin also includes the following substances Butylhydroxyanisole (E320), Cetyl alcohol, Glycerol, Liquid paraffin, Polysorbate 60, Potassium sorbate, Purified water, All-rac -? –tocopherol, Hydrochloric acid, and White soft paraffin.

Side Effects of Fucidin 

Side effects from using Fucidin cream are rare. Common ones include:
  • Irritation at site of application.
  • Itching and rash.
  • Eczema.
