Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating is known medically as hyperhidrosis and affects about 2-5% of the population. In most cases, it is a genetic issue with no underlying condition. Primary hyperhidrosis is excess swearing which occurs with no underlying cause. Secondary hyperhidrosis is excess sweating which results from treatment with certain medications, medical procedures and chronic illness.

The most common places to be affected are the hands, soles of the feet, armpits and the scalp.

At Evermore we can treat excessive sweating using a number of techniques:

– Aluminium Chloride (Driclor©) – roll-on preparation for the armpits

Anti-perspirants are usually the first line of treatment for underarm and palm sweating, but are not as useful in other areas. Driclor©, a brand of aluminium chloride, blocks sweat glands to prevent excess sweating.  It is usually applied at night and washed off in the morning. In the long term it destroys sweat glands, therefore can be used less frequently as sweating decreases. Irritation is a common side effect, and may often require the use of hydrocortisone 1% to reduce this. Speak to your healthcare professional at Evermore about Driclor©.

– Anti-cholinergic tablets (Pro-Banthine©)

Pro-banthine© tablets contain the medication propantheline bromide. Pro-banthine slows nerve conduction and relaxes small muscles. This helps with stomach cramps, involuntary urination and excess sweating (hyperhidrosis). Speak to your pharmacist at Evermore to find out if Pro-banthine is suitable for you.

– Anti-wrinkle injections (Botulinum toxin)

Hyperhydrosis can actually be treated using anti-wrinkle injections of botulinum toxin. The treatment is a quick procedure, with minimal discomfort and little to no recovery time.

Which areas can be treated with botulinum toxin?

At Evermore we can treat excess swearing using anti-wrinkle injections on the palm of the hands, soles of the feet and the under the armpits.

Consultation:

Your clinician will discuss with you specifically which areas are causing the most issues with regard to sweating. They will then mark out a grid-like system on the skin to indicate which areas to inject. Your clinician may also apply some local anaesthetic cream if requested.

Receiving treatment of botulinum toxin:

The procedure takes approximately 5-10 minutes. Your injection will inject up to 15 injections per site however, the injections are very superficial (just below the skin) meaning they’re minimally invasive and relatively painless.

After treatment of botulinum toxin:

Immediately after: The treatment requires no recovery time post-procedure and you can carry on with your usual activities as normal. If it occurs, bruising is minimal but can be mitigated with a cold compress on the treated areas.

1-4 weeks: The Injections can take anywhere between 1-4 weeks to take effect, with the effect gradually improving over time up to the 4 week point.

4 weeks onwards: The benefits of treatment will now be in full effect, lasting between 6-9 months before another treatment is required.

Anti-wrinkle injections treatments are often effective on their own, but they may also be used in combination with the other treatments mentioned:

– Aluminium Chloride (Driclor©) – roll-on preparation for the armpits
– Anti-cholinergic tablets (Pro-Banthine©)

If you feel that this is necessary, it can be discussed in your consultation.

The cost of Anti-wrinkle injections varies depending on the amount needed for the area treated. No two patients are the same and the price is adjusted and optimised for your body. This will be all be discussed at your consultation.

In the United Kingdom there are three brands of botulinum toxin in circulation. The most commonly known is Botox, and as this was the original product this is how botulinum toxin is commonly referred. The other two brands are Azzalure and Boccature. All three brands provide natural looking, successful results, meaning that no brand is better than another and you can have confidence in whichever is used in your treatment.
